Hi Cody. First of all, I wish you well with your problems and hope you've found some relief and peace.
I had my first and only root canal about 8 years ago (I'm now 67) and soon after started experiencing hair loss. I should note that I have always had a thick, luxuriant head of hair (though my hair went white early), and still do on the rest of my head. My father died with every hair intact. this is absolutely not natural baldness. The hair loss is in a band about 11/2 inches wide from hairline to crown, on one side of my head, the same side as the root-canal tooth. Part of my eyebrow in line with the tooth has also lost hair. For years I've told myself that I would eventually recover, and managed to maintain that state of mind and deal with looking at myself in the mirror. But recently the barber said she thought the loss was extending, and gave me tips about continuing to successfully hide the bald strip. The same week, the dermatologist also told me I'd better get used to never seeing that hair again.
I never would have thought that something like this could cause me so much distress. I'm usually a "handle it" kind of guy, and as I say I've managed to cope with it for years now - as long as it seemed there was hope of recovery. But after those two "opinions" I can't shake the feeling that it will continue to get worse, and I need to do something, everything I can, even if there's no hope of improvement.
I should also mention that I have had other ongoing symptoms similar to what I've read about in this thread; "popping" in my ears, headaches, the feeling that air is entering via my ear when I breathe, etc. AND that the edge of the crown over the root-canal tooth is exposed above the gum - what I think is called "open margin".
I've never been a regular dental patient. I have naturally healthy teeth, and I've abused that privilege. In this case I waited way too long to get treatment for an old filling that had fallen out. I also tend to mistrust doctors in general, partly due to personal experience with the way my father was handled by the profession. Now my reaction has been to stay away from the dentist. But I feel I need to do something (I know I said that already). My question is, can they tell if there's a bacterial colonization of the root-canal tooth? Should I see another dentist altogether?
Please, if anyone has ideas or comments, respond. And Cody, please let us know what your experience has been - even if it's hard to talk about. I know what that's like. In any case, God bless you for sharing your experiences. I found this thread at a time when I badly needed it. It makes me feel much less alone.
