How is it being used--the protocol? We drown on water but of course need to consume certain amounts of it in certain ways.
The mice in this study who received infrequent dose ALA shortly after exposure to inorganic Hg ended up with more Hg in the brain and organs even though they also excreted more Hg than control mice. Cutler explains here.

This is why Cutler is adamant about using ALA (lipoic acid) carefully. He also strongly recommends generous amounts of antioxidants and reminds people to consider adrenal support (hypoglycemia can be a symptoms of adrenal insufficiency).
For the thousands of Hg toxic people who have gotten life-changing gains from using ALA in Cutler's protocol, it would be "scary" to think of the consequences of not using it. These two reports in the large Yahoo detox group come to mind as examples.

Lots of people who don't have a Hg problem have reported gains in neuropathy symptoms while on ALA. I know one personally.
