newport has pointed out on numerous occasions that selenium is not a good chelator. it can grab mercury but the bond is weak and can end up letting go of it before it is eliminated.
a dont think the admonition is to NOT take selenium but simply to not count on it for mercury chelation and to take another chelator like DMSA.
