I think what you've really been suffering for years from is not getting enough calories and that's why you feel calmer and better when eating more. I think that's what "AF" really is and that's why the symptoms attributed to "AF" are the exact same symptoms of prolonged under-eating/calorie-restriction and why women are diagnosed with "AF" by alternative practitioners more than men, because women calorie-restrict more in our society, unfortunately.
Best thing you can do is start tracking how many calories you're averaging to make sure you're getting enough and to see how big the amount of food that you'll need to be eating. It might be a little overwhelming at first, but once you start feeling better by consistently eating more, you'll be like "bring on the food!" As long as it's mostly the right food, of course lol.
I use these sites to help track my food and find out what my macro ratio is:

I base my diet around high-calorie carb foods, like sweet fruits (bananas, mangoes, dates, peaches), root tubers (potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, etc), and grains (rice, wheat, oats, quinoa, etc). Then only a moderate amount of vegetables and minimum amounts of over-fats (avocados, nuts & seeds, coconut, any animal products). I don't use oils anymore, but they would count as an over-fat.
Diets to check out are Starch Solution, Engine 2, and what I eat most closely too, the Raw Till 4 diet, which is mostly lots of fruit for breakfast & lunch, then high-carb/low-fat cooked meals in the evening. You don't have to be fully vegetarian/vegan on any of these diets (I'm not), but it's recommended to keep animal products to a minimum because they're high in fat and toxic in large amounts.
