Chris,

Even though I don't have Dr Fuhrmans book right now, I know that it does not have any references to the research that supports your speculation that lack of activity during a fast will spare more protein. I know that, because I have read just about all the scientific literature on fasting available in English and Russian. There were studies that determined the loss of muscle during a fast (all on people confined to a bleak existence in a metabolic ward) but no comparative studies between those who exercised and not. There are only anecdotal reports by regular weight lifters that contradict your speculation.

As for "When one is fasting, the person is consciously diverting energy from the digestive system to the immune system." Consciously? lol

And while you're right about GH increasing (10-fold) after a few days fast, the 'reason' you give does not explain why. You merely state that GH goes up _because_ more hormones are produced (actually, some more, some less and also depends on the stage of the fast). It'd be really something if GH went up while less of it was produced lol.

And I'm passing on your copy and paste efforts re BMR calculations.

Regarding the rest of your links, the ScienceDaily article about extended longevity due CR refers to rodents, flies and yeast -- but Okinawans are indeed a good example of the benefits of their unique diet.

As for the blogger who shares his ideas why the monkeys CR study did not show life extension ..well, he is just a blogger. He has his opinions and I have mine. I prefer to base my opinions on actual studies rather than rely on what is sensationalized and dumbed down by the reporters for general public.
