In the early morning @ about 5am January 31, 1974 John J Lxxx was a guest in my home when he entered the bedroom of my home and began to beat my wife and I about the head and upper body with a metal bar. We both received extensive injuries, my wife required nearly 100 stiches to close her physical wounds. I only required 30 stitches or so but he did manage to severe my little finger as I apparently put my hand over my head to shield the blows. My other 3 fingers were smashed. In the dark and confusion I left the bedroom to retrieve a gun hidden in a bookshelf just a few feet from the couch where John had been sleeping. When he realized I was no longer in the bedroom he came after me but by the time he exited the bedroom I already had my hands on my pistol. I fired one shot in his direction, missing him, at which point he drops the bar and puts his hands up. He exclaims "I'm having flashbacks"....I paused.John had been seriously wounded in Vietnam. I thought we were friends as he was a schoolmate and friend of my older brother. I knew his 3 siblings from school. We renewed our friendship in 1971 after his recovery from his wounds. We became good friends over the next few years and even vacationed together once.He began to apologize over and over saying he had a flash back from Vietnam....I believed him. He helped me attend to my wife who was in shock. I wrapped my hand and gave my wife a towel and he drove us to the hospital. Upon arriving at the hospital with John in tow, they asked what happened and I lied and told police officers that we were forced off the road and attacked....to protect John. I required surgery to reattach my finger. He apologized again and left. Presumably to hitchhike back to Pennsylvania. The next day when I returned home only to find the house had been burglarized and $3300 had been take from a hiding spot. There were no signs of forced entry. I called his younger brother, Donald, in Pennsylvania to ask him if was aware of what happened, at which point he informed that John had borrowed a car from a friend days before and was gone with the car for 4 days. When he arrived at my home after dark he was on foot saying he was hitching to Florida and only wanted to spent the night. I realized then it was all a lie. We then went to the police dept and swore out warrants for his arrest. On Feb 5th my wife had a miscarriage. Fetal homicide was not a crime at that time. I was incensed. The police were moving too slow. On Feb 7th my self and 2 friends drove to Pennsylvania. We arrived at the house John shared in the Pennsylvania country side of Bucks county in the early morning hours. Where I entered the house alone and armed and somehow the 1st bedroom I walked into there lay John. I struck him in the head with the but of the pistol and then fired a shot close to his head. I was shaking like a leaf. I ordered him to get up and forced him outside and into my vehicle and held a gun on him for the next 12 hours as we drove 700 miles back to my home. Very little was said the whole trip. Upon arriving in Louisville I took him straight to the police station which was probably the only reason my friends and I were not arrested for kidnapping. He was taken into custody and charged with Malicious Striking and wounding with intent to kill. He subsequently failed to show up for the upcoming court date and was charged with bail jumping and was eventually extradited to KY. After him spending several months in jail and several court dates I agreed to a lesser charge and was compensated $4925. My plan was....I've gotten my money back...now all I have to do is get even with John. I knew I would eventually KILL John. Well long story short life got in the way and over time I moved on. My marriage ended. In the 39 years since this happend I've led a successful life and have much to be thankful for. Several years ago I found John online. He was selling guns on GUNBROKER.COM from his recently deceased father estate. I was so angry. I called the ATF to report this and they weren't very interested. After more investigation on my part I find he has a wife and two children living happily in Pennsylvania. I did eventually remarry but NEVER considered having children...how could I keep my children safe if I couldn't even keep myself safe. I've sent him several emails but he does not answer....I only want to know WHY?? The longer he avoids me the angrier I become. I'm just trying to figure out how to deal with this
