We just spent an amazing weekend out in Ft. Bragg at the

Living Light Culinary Institute...



The event was the Vibrant Living Expo and it was possibly the best health expo I've been to.



(We have videos on the site with some highlights on some

of the most recent shows!)



But that's not why I'm writing this...



I'm writing to talk about protein.



Yes, the biggest veggie, vegan, raw foodie question there possibly is.



At the Vibrant Living Expo, I was talking to two personal trainers about vegan and raw food training.



(Hey Marina and Stephen!)



They both agreed that they get the protein question all the time. They also agreed that they'd both like to increase their recovery time from their workouts...



Which means they'd like to power up quickly and really get the most out of their fitness sessions.



I agreed this was something that most people want as well.



Protein can help you do this.



But here's the deal. Most of us are brainwashed into thinking that we need more protein than we really do AND many of us still think that we need it from an animal source.



So let's break those down.



1. We need a lot of protein.



False. We need between 5-15% of our daily caloric intake to be protein. This is actually much, much less than the average western eater is consuming. 2-3 times less.



We can get all our protein from fruits and veggies.



The only way we can have a protein deficiency is if we don't eat enough calories.



So if you were a woman who needed 1500 calories a day and you ate only bananas (1% protein per calorie) and you only ate 2 of them a day, then, yes, you would be a serious candidate for protein deficiency.



2. We need protein from animal sources.



Again, false. We really don't need protein. What we need is amino acids which form the building blocks of protein. We can get amino acids from most foods, not just animal products. Animal products are a source of amino acids and a high spectrum of them, so this is why many people think it's a good source.



Here's the challenge though... T. Colin Campbell's China Study points out the Catch 22 of animal products quite specifically.



The higher the intake of animal protein the higher the incidence of disease and cancer. In fact, more than 1.5% of your daily caloric intake of animal protein can put you into this danger zone according to his book.



So what to do...



Back to my talk with Stephen and Marina...



I suggested to them that they find a combination of plant based proteins to figure out what works best for them.



A mixture can give you a full spectrum of amino acids as well as give you great energy and recovery.



That's what I've done.



I have experimented with blue green algae, hemp, maca and brown rice powders. All with varying results. And these are the four that I suggest to experiment with.



The brown rice protein I've been experimenting with is SunWarrior, which I'll explain here.



I'm particularly fond of SunWarrior brown rice powder for these specific reasons...



1. It is bio-fermented, not chemically extracted. Which means the protein is extracted using a fermentation process, not chemical HCL.



2. It is 100% raw.



3. It's 85% absorbable protein, which means more aminos that are readily digested. Compare this with 50% from hemp.

5. It has personally helped with my own recovery time and endurance when I run.

The only possible negatives of the product are that some may be sensitive to the carrageenan (which is a natural seaweed used for texture) and some may not like the stevia in the Vanilla and Chocolate Flavors.

Mike Adams has been raving about this product and I tend to think just as highly of it.



The reason you've never heard of it until now, is that is didn't exist! It's brand new. :-)



So here's what I suggest. Experiment with the 4 that I mentioned above and for those of you who are looking for that energy boost, looking for more protein, looking to move away from whey or other supplements, and looking to give your body high quality amino acids give SunWarrior a shot.
