"Plus, borax is acidic (found that out the hard way when I put it into seltzer water -- KABOOM!) "

No. No kaboom. Borax is sodium tetraborate which is the sodium salt of a weak acid and that makes it a moderately strong base. Borax is the opposite of acidic, it is basic, first year chemistry stuff. You might have witnessed effervescence if you did that but it would be no different than had you put any particulate substance into carbonated water. The particles act as nucleation sites for the decomp of the bicarbonate ion in acidic media as carbonic acid is, and a little powder has an enormous surface area for nucleation. But this is not anything to do with nuclear, don't let my use of "nucleation" frighten you, there is no cause for worry or concern at all. Just don't do any chemistry experiments without wearing your safety goggles, standard practice even in the high school.
