Strains really do matter. The human gut is its own ecosystem with various different niches suited for different bacteria. The stomach is highly acidic, the colon is more suited for anaerobes, etc. Think of it like the earth with hundreds of varieties of plants (the gut has hundreds of strains of bacteria in it). You can't just plant palm trees all over the place and expect them to grow wherever you place them. The colder climates will kill them off. It's the same with bacterial strains. With lactobacillus and bifidobacterium, no matter how many you take, they're always going to remain in specific locations in your gut. That may be suitable in your case but you may need to target other areas in the gut as well.

Also, different bacterial strains have different properties and capabilities. The lactobacilli secrete lactic acid, bifidobacteria and bacteroides are really good at digesting large plant molecules. I actually suspect it's the digestive capability of bacteroides that's proving useful against the candida in my case.

So please, if nothing else, be aware of the actual strains of bacteria in your probiotic. It really does make a difference.
