My apologies for the lack of updates to those people who were following this… very ROUGH week… and I'm very frustrated to say that I broke my fast toward the end of day 3 (and for something I've experienced only a handful of times in my life): EXTREME nausea (that was clearly induced by my constipation).
Unlike my greatly improved energy levels, absence of hunger, and the many other positives I reported, the ONE major area where the coconut oil fell short was in helping with my EXTREME constipation. On the evening of Day 2, I was experiencing mild to moderate constipation. I'd stupidly let myself run out of Epsom Salts AND anti-constipation herbs; and despite my small-town grocery store's modest offering of vitamins/herbs/OTC remedies, Epsom Salts was not among them. The constipation was mild enough that I did not feel like spending the time/money to drive 40 miles to a regular grocery store to purchase Epsom Salts (especially when I'd be going into the city the next morning)…
…if only I had know precisely how ingesting coconut oil while being constipated would have made me feel, I would not have hesitated to make that 40 mile drive! About 10 minutes after ingesting about 2 TBSP of coconut oil on the evening of Day 2, I experienced mild to moderate nausea that kept me awake for about 2-3 hours. Very strangely, when I awoke the next morning, (despite nothing more than some modest discomfort from the constipation), I felt instantly very nauseous at the mere SMELL of coconut oil (which I normally find very pleasant/refreshing!). I held my nose and managed to ingest a measly 3 grams (FYI: 1 TBSP = 14 grams). By 3 PM, I had only been able to stomach a grand total of 10 grams of coconut oil, not even a full TBSP!!! Amazingly, aside from feeling like I could use a little bit more energy, my energy levels were still much better than normal during the day, and I ingested less than half the quantity of caffeine that I'd normally consume before starting the coconut oil. However, by evening I was exhausted and hungry. I'd taken the max dose of Epsom salts (20 grams) at around noon, but unlike the label says, (1/2 to 6 hrs), Epsom salts typically take 8 to 12 hrs to kick in for me. Hungry, unable to sleep, and barely able to even stomach the smell of coconut oil on the evening of Day 3, I ate normal food (fruits, veggies, nuts/seeds), easily polishing off about 2,400 calories (and not even feeling full).
I passed the blockage in the middle of the night of what would have been Day 3 into Day 4. On the morning of what would have been Day 4, I went to take the coconut oil and it "magically" smelled as pleasant as it normally does; I did not experience even a mere trace of nausea from smelling it, nor from ingesting 6 TBSP of it (2 TBSP at breakfast, lunch, & dinner).
As of yet, I have not been able to go back to the coconut oil fast; the flare up with my constipation has been too severe, and I'm very concerned (in more ways than one) of resorting to Epsom salts daily. I typically take the Epsom salts as an SOS/last resort. Lately, the cycle has been: bail out w/ Epsom salts, try various remedies/herbs/etc. for the next 24-48 hrs. (which thus far have been failing), remain constipation for a day, and then "bail" with the Epsom salts. The day I'm able to evacuate, there is NO nausea from the coconut oil; the second day (as the constipation is building up), I experience mild to moderate nausea; and the third day (modestly constipated) I can barely stomach the smell of the coconut oil without extreme nausea, let alone consume it.
The whole situation is a huge disappointment to say the least. I guess I'll be hanging out on the constipation forums until I can get a better handle on that and then re-visit the coconut oil fasting.
