In my experience its best to avoid balms, chemicals, gels, making it wet - hence the advise to leave your lips alone. But at the same time you don't want weeks and weeks of buildup where all the dead skin stick together taking the new skin with it.
Using a natural oil containing no petrochemicals (coconut for me), can help remove the dead skin, but dont apply it to the fresh skin otherwise it will turn to paste in your sleep. Rather apply it to the healthy skin at the bottom and the bottom part of the scabs.
Unless your used to living with EC, it'll take you a while to adapt to brushing your teeth, keeping your scabs dry, how to drink and eat without moisture touching your lips... so maybe its best for you to start off clipping the scabs with some sterile scissors once they start to detatch and focus on keeping your lips dry as much as possible.
