I think that we each have life experiences that have pointed us in directions that are different than others.

I was raised in a Pentecostal home under the influence of a well worn razor strap and each of my parents tried to kill me as an infant/child.  My mother strangled me until I passed out and she then had a change in heart.  My father's abuse I won't even post.  He was a former missionary.  Yet to this day I appreciate everything that he did to me and for me and he is my inspiration for my direction.  His dedication and commitment to his God impresses me to this day.  I know that he has forgiven himself for his actions and we almost got to discussing it when I was an adult, but it just didn't happen.  (We all have to forgive ourselves for what others do to us - it is our creation.)  My forgiveness of him didn't happen over night, but the beauty in that path with God's help is a pleasure beyond description.

I'll take combat in Korea any day over having to relive my childhood.  When I got to Korea I had a loaded rifle in hand with hand grenades hanging from my flack jacket ready to kill anything that moved.  I had plenty of experience in the trench but I thank God the war ended before that happened but it has provided me with purpose and direction that other things never would have done.
