Well, this "idiot" can tell in certain circumstances, but in the case of persistent contrails in multi-variate atmospheric conditions that are normal (and they do happen) I don't know how anyone truly could. I'd be happy to discuss the meteorological science behind it...even though I'm an "idiot".
