Hi kislany; welcome to the forum, posting.
Your dad is right, also not; selenium is poison. So are everything taken in excess, like water. When it comes to iodine, not so dangerous, as it is out within few hours, days.
(A couple of years ago there was an accident with polo-horses; they were given gram doses of selenium, instead of mg /mcg; and dropped dead shortly after the shot.)
We need some selenium to convert thyroid hormones, also to adress the over consumption of omega 6 oils, vegetable oils.
Important for cancers.
Taken in the right form, selenium methionine in MCG doses, with the iodine. No problem.

Also know that selenium, same as iodine; has been attacked from the big medical pharma`s companies; as it is a competitor to their medications.
For enlarged prostate, in addition to Iodine / selenium.
Vit E, herbs like Saw Palmetto. Boron, Magnesium.
And always vit B and C.
I have a theory that the enlarged prostate is the male version of the fibrocystic breasts. But I cant prove it :)
