Coincidentally I've also been checking out light harvesting algae/cyanobacteria!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light-harvesting_complex

Light-harvesting complexes have their pigments specifically positioned to optimize these rates. Absorption of a photon by a molecule can lead to electronic excitation when the energy of the captured photon matches that of an electronic transition. The fate of such excitation can be a return to the ground state or another electronic state of the same molecule. When the excited molecule has a nearby neighbour molecule, the excitation energy may also be transferred, through electromagnetic interactions, from one molecule to another. This process is called resonance energy transfer, and the rate depends strongly on the distance between the energy donor and energy acceptor molecules. Light-harvesting complexes have their pigments specifically positioned to optimize these rates.

CHECK THIS:

photosynthetic purple bacteria the antenna complexes function as light-harvesting systems that absorb light radiation and transfer the excitation energy to the reaction centres.

This is one of the "black hairs" that many sufferers have gliding around on/in them:

And here's the business end acting all fiber optic:

They look somewhat like cylindrospermopsis racborskii, which is also known for neurotoxicity or maybe BRAINFOG! This is the internet comparison photo:
