If you take the "cottonballs w/ legs" out of the water, they don't look like cotton anymore. The sac they are encased in is some type of thick slimy mucousy sac, these things pop in and out of it, and when they are in it they are protected. I have messed with them with tweezers and they are very weird.

Lots of variations, 100+ strains of borrelia. Who knows...Also, these things arent easy to get out of you, I have used almost every herb, and only thing that worked was my citrus drink. I havent tried large enough doses of salt/c yet, but imagine that would get em too.
