I just came across Dr. Hardy's reply and find his advice very helpful, except for this: "Drink six 8oz glasses of spring, or filtered water a day" plus "1 glass grape juice". My uncle was diagnosed with congestive heart failure 2 years ago. He was told that drinking a lot of water did not apply to patients with CHF: When you have congestive heart failure, your body has difficulty excreting excess fluid, which leads to a build up of fluid in the legs, the abdomen, around the heart and the lungs, causing shortness of breath and gasping for air while lying flat. Excess fluid adds an extra burden to an already weakened heart. Patients are given diuretics to rid the body of fluid. They should cut out/ limit salt intake to prevent fluid retention. CHF patients must *limit* the amount of fluids they drink, if necessary. Drinking lots of spring water may help with most other diseases, but it is harmful when you have congestive heart failure. (Of course, the amount of fluid needed depends on a person's size, the weather, etc.).
I hope your mom is doing well, curlygirl. She is still relatively young, and hopefully can live many more years and still be active. Please look up Dr. Stephen Sinatra. He is an integrative cardiologist and an author of numerous books. For CHF, he recommends the following formula to energize the heart. He calls it the "awesome foursome":
* 7-10 grams D-Ribose (in powdered form) per day
* 2-4 g L-Carnitine per day
* 300-600 mg Coenzyme Q 10/ day (studies have shown that this vitamin alone significantly reduces hospitalization and mortality rates among CHF patients)
* at least 400 mg Magnesium/ day
You should divide the dosages to be taken 3 times per day, ideally. Also be sure that your mom is on a good supplement regimen. She should also take 3-4 g fish oil capsules per day and eat fish more frequently. Vitamin C, at least 2 g in divided doses, is also important.
I would like to add that my uncle, 87 yrs. old with advanced CHF, improved significantly app. 3 weeks after beginning the "awesome foursome" regimen. He has a lot more energy to work in his large garden, and in summer often doesn't come inside until 10 pm!
(My apologies to Dr. Hardy. As the relative of a patient with severe CHF, I felt I had to reply because of my uncle's experiences and having spoken to his doctors.)
