Hi all,
I, like you, have exfoliative cheilitis. From what I've read my symptoms were pretty standard and ranged from moderate to severe. The skin on my lips would dry out and peel off. When wet they'd turn white. It was embarrassing and made me shy and withdrawn. Over the course of about 10 years I tried everything. EVERYTHING. I quit smoking, got in shape, changed toothpaste, systematically tried cutting all kinds of things out of my diet. I applied creams, lotions, spoke to my doctor and nothing made any difference. I'm happy to report that I finally found something that helped and although it's not a cure, it has stopped my exfoliative cheilitis effecting my life. I thought I'd found solutions before, only to have my hopes dashed. I'm happy to report that it's been two years since I started this regime and it really has given me my life back.
The solution is simple and costs next to nothing. All you need is a toothbrush and some of the antiseptic, Savlon. While this appears to be a British brand, I'm sure wherever you are in the world, you'll be able to buy it over the Internet. A standard sized tube of the stuff costs about £1.40 and lasts for several months.
Simply put, my regime consists of regularly brushing my lips gently with the toothbrush and then massaging in Savlon afterwards. When you have a shower in the morning, take your toothbrush in with you and brush your lips. There's no need to scrub them hard, just a light going over will do. When you start doing this you may not be able to get all the dead skin off. Don't worry, it'll become more manageable over time.
The next step is to dab your lips dry with a towel and they liberally apply the savlon. Gently massage it in. You'll end up with your lips and the surrounding area covered in the stuff. Then leave it for thirty or so seconds. I find that if I do it when I get out of the shower that the time it takes to dry myself is long enough. Then, just take a towel and dab off the excess. Don't worry if your lips look a bit redder than usual, this is just because you've stimulated the blood flow to them by rubbing them. They'll go back to normal in a minute or so.
What seems to happen is that the lip skin takes absorbs the savlon and it keeps them from drying out. This prohibits the top layer of the skin from dying so quickly. The toothbrush technique just stops the small amount of dead skin cells that you still get from accumulating.
Throughout the day you will need to keep reapplying the Savlon. Don't worry though, you'll only need to do it a few times a day and you'll come to recognise the feeling when they're drying out and it's time to reapply. I just pop to the bathroom and massage a bit more in, wait and dab off the excess. Whenever I clean my teeth I also make sure to brush my lips.
You do need to stop yourself from licking your lips but this will become habit pretty quickly after a while.
The only other thing is that the last thing I do at night is apply a load of the stuff to keep me through the night. It will disappear of it's own accord over time so you needed be concerned about your signicant other waking up and wondering what's on your lips (if that's a concern for you). My wife has no idea that I do this and we spend all our time together.
So that's it. I remember how depressed it made me struggling with this and figured it would be good to search out other people who were suffering as I was and share the secret of how I got my life back. I only hope it works for you as it works for me.
