Sounds like C has always had the "upper hand" and cares nothing about vows and the institution of marriage and has little respect for X. Obviously honor and commitment was not part of C's plan.

The house burned to the ground because X chose crappy materials and C lit the fire. Now X wants to rebuild the same house using the same crappy materials while still living with the same arsonist. X has permanent burn scars by C and will always be in fear of getting burned again while trying to put forward a facade to replace something that was never real in the first place.

Seems quite humiliating for X. X sounds desperate and probably feels trapped, maybe has limited options financially or thinks getting another mate is impossible.

Too bad this degeneration is so common. Shallow short term primitive desires like sex and food have surpassed long term decency, honor and respect in nearly every aspect of society and marriage is no exception.
