It is thought that mitochondria MAY have ORIGINATED as a prokaryotic cell (ie bacteria). This does not mean it is toxic/foreign to the body. Mitochondria is a vital cell organelle (just as the lungs are a vital body organ) that is required for cellular respiration and ATP synthesis (energy for cells). Without mitochondria the cells would not even function.
