I have 5% Lugols in my cupboard but have yet to take it because of mixed opinions I have read.

Is it absolutely neccessary to see a doctor or get tests on my thyroid before I start taking Iodine? How many drops of 5% should I start out with? I eat healthy, I filter my water, dont eat wheat or flour. I also drink salt daily for quite some time now. Any help would be much appreciated.
