I have been very much into health and fitness for a number of years but didn't delve deeply into the physics and functionality of it until about three years back.
Today I had the realization that man needs basically nothing else but his own bodyweight to build a fine physical specimen.
Just look at the gymnasts to see what an incredible body one can build by bodyweight exercise alone.
Animals are also a great example. Look at the deer, sleek and sinewy, with trim muscle bellies, and can run for great distances and also jump very high and far.
Mr. Gorilla can bench press the equivalent of 4000lbs.
My buddy the oragutan can kill a crocodile with its bare hands.
They say the chimpanzee has the strength of seven men. The chimpanzee can deadlift 600lbs with one arm. They can pull over 1000lbs with just one arm.
These are the creatures I want to emulate to obtain great strength and agility. Not the bloated puffy muscles of bodybuilders.
So on this information I have decided to sell my weight bench and 300lbs of weights and go for bodyweight exercise for most of my weight workouts. I will keep my 5-40lbs dumbbells for light weights once a week, but I am giving up the heavy weights for good.
Go for the functional fitness, it will serve you and your body much better in the long one.
