Just because something grows in nature does not mean it is safe for human consumption. Many plants, berries and herbs are poisonous, and many more can have harmful effects when used consistently. I suspect the carcinogenic plants are labeled as such because of the way they affect cell growth and when taken into a polluted body full of other, usually unnatural environmental toxins, they may cause side effects not noted in pre-industrial days. Sassafras and Comfrey are two herbs that have been deemed dangerous, that were common remedies only a few decades ago.

Comfrey promotes new cell growth and has been a "female tonic" for hundreds of years. However, in a person with a weakened immune system, a toxic body, and a history of an unhealthy lifestyle, this healing herb can trigger the rapid growth and spread of certain cancers. My grandmother always kept comfrey growing near the house, a crushed leaf was good for bruises and burns, she was not one for homemade teas going back to the early days of the 20th century when mountain folk used sheep manure tea to break out measles in a child. My stepmother used to come here (in the Ozarks) and dig spring sassafras roots for her tea. Both women died of cancer, while I do not believe the herbs were the causative agents, I cannot help but wonder if the presence of the carcinogenic compounds were one of the reasons both died a very rapid and painful death.

Many herbs need to be considered drugs, not food. They must be used with a great deal of care and knowledge. Just as a daily dose of senna or cascara Sagrada will make you dependent on then for bowel movements, other herbal drugs can result in addiction, toxic reactions or death. While I do strongly believe herbal products are far superior to man made chemically produced pharmaceuticals, they must be treated with respect. Knowledge is the key.
