this is a very good question... i'm of the belief that this is not an injury but rather the expression of a former injury... on one hand, i don't think having old scabs on your lips are necessarily great for this condition because they become very cumbersome, are hard to lubricate and medicate, and may be a breeding ground for bacteria... on the other hand, i don't believe you should ever expose the raw skin beneath by taking them completely off manually as that will only increase inflammation and worsen the condition... my doctors orders are to leave the scabs on... personally, i've had the best luck leaving them on, but trimming the excess with scissors... ideally, you would be able to debride the top of the off the scabs off and still leave a protective layer covering the raw skin... but that's almost impossible to do without taking too much off.
