Ophthalmologists treat patients with optic neuritis. Have you tried consulting them? They'd be able to guide you better in this regard. For mild or moderate pain, analgesics that can be purchased over the counter, such as Tylenol and Motrin, are recommended. For more severe pain, prescription pain medication, such as Demerol, Darvon and Percocet are used. For serious stabbing and jerking pains that some neuritis sufferers experience, anticonvulsants, which prevent and reduce convulsions, are prescribed. Some of the same drugs used to treat epilepsy, such as Diazepam and Neurontin, can be used for neuritis pain. In combination with the drugs, physical therapy may be recommended for pain if the neuritis is in an area of the body, such as the shoulder, that would benefit from the therapy. Surgery is rarely used as a pain relief for neuritis.

Many herbs are also available for neuritis pain relief.Drinking tea made from skullcap or lavender herbs can calm the nerves and relieve neuritis pain. Tea made from black cohosh can have the same effect. For an external treatment, combine cool medicinal clay with oil from lemon balm or cream from comfrey and rub it on the painful area. Make a compress from the vervain herb and use it as an external pain treatment. Oil from the hayseed plant is another topical treatment option. It can be wrapped around the inflamed area to relieve pain. The neuritis can also be massaged with oil from the arnica herb.

Vitamins can help with neuritis pain relief. Vitamin B-2 can be taken when nerves are irritated by neuritis. Neuritis nerve pain may also respond to B-12 vitamins. Fatty acids, such as those found in the evening primrose herb, are important to the nervous system because they keep the nerves from becoming inflamed and are able to relieve some neuritis pain.

Hydrotherapy is also well-known for treating neuritis pain with water.

Hope this helps.
