Latest research indicates that humans are not related to modern apes.

Both human and modern apes such as gorillas descend from a common ancestor. They parted on their own evolutionary path about 5 million years ago. Consequently, they have had a separate evolutionary path.

Our genes are similar, but all mamals genes are similar and apes have a similar design to humans so the genes match would be closer than dissimilar animals.
