An article from 1971 suggests a crusted, swollen lip is caused by infected minor salivary glands and enlargement of salivary glands (chronic sialadenitis), which include dilated orifices of salivary ducts. The recommended treatment was vermilionectomy or labial mucosal stripping to remove the infected minor salivary glands.
