Ok my genova stool sample results arrived.
Bacteriology
Lactobacillus species : *No growth
Escherichia Coli : 4+
Bifidobacterium : 4+
Additional bacteria
alpha haemolytic Streptococcus : 3+
Coag. negative Staphylococcus : 1+
I also have high levels of betaglucuronidase. Apparently this is an enzyme induced when anaerobic microbes ferment and this is symptomatic of upper gut fermention. I also have low levels of short chain fatty acids which should be high in my diet considering the amount of vegetables I've been eating.
The doctor who looked over my results sent me the following advice in order of importance.
1. Eat a zero carb diet , the idea is to fuel the body with fats instead of carbohydrates. This is because fats cannot be fermented by microbes and is the first step to starving the little wretches out.
2. Take micronutrient supplements transdermally - Minerals and vitamins that can be sprayed onto the skin.
3. Take vitamin C to bowel tolerance - at least 1 gram with every meal and possibly up to 3-4 grams. The idea is to use vitamin C to sterilize the upper gut but not the lower gut.
4. Use high dose probiotics such as kefir, ie. two to three cupfuls daily and fermented foods such as sauerkraut to physically displace upper fermenting microbes.
I've tried a zero carb diet in the past and I'm not sure it's the way forward for me. I may lower my carbs slightly and follow the rest of the advice completely.
I was also last week diagnosed with H pylori and a stomach ulcer following a small bowel enteroscopy. Other than H pylori the problem of not knowing exactly what " microbe" is causing so many problems. I could still have candida and it not be present in my stool results.
The lack of Lactobacillus is somewhat worrying also. After years of Antibiotics though it's not surprising , any thoughts on these results ?.
