As someone who has lurked on this site for quite awhile and tried Iodine with very bad results, I totally agree with this. I am reading the entire article now and found this quote further down the page.
"Most people are unaffected by excess iodine. The dosages and responses presented here represent those individuals who do respond adversely to excessive levels. The studies providing incidence information indicate that probably less than 10% of the general population responds adversely to excess iodine."
I am part of that less than 10%. I used Iodine for about 6 months with a gently increasing dose. I made sure I took the companion supplements like selenium. I did my homework - I thought.
At 15 mg per day, I noticed that my RA went from mostly in remission to more frequent flares than ever before. I wrote it off as part of the healing. At about 20 mg per day, my throat starting closing in. I didn't know it at the time but it was a goiter developing. At 30 mg per day, I experienced very scary double vision, heart palpitations, light headedness, cold tingly numbness in my head and adrenal glands and nausea. I spent six hours a day feeling like I was going to die followed by such fatigue. It was the scariest thing I have ever gone through. I have been off the Iodine for almost 8 weeks and while the intensity has decreased, the episodes still happen about twice a week. I have been to the ER and seen my regular doctor six times.
I have tried to resume a much lower dose of iodine because I do believe all the health benefits I have read but even on just 2 mg a day, my symptoms return including RA flares once a week instead of twice a year. The last two days I have taken 450 mcg and so far so good.
It would have been good to know that some people simply cannot do high dose iodine. I have since done even more research and found out that those with autoimmune diseases especially are at a high risk for autoimmune thyroid issues and iodine can make that far worse. There are multiple paths to healing and wholeness. Iodine is just one of those paths.
For those of you that are upset by these cautions, I have a question for you. What if you are wrong? There is evidence that iodine increases the risk of thyroid cancer. If somebody dies as a result of high dose iodine, can you live with that? Is it worth the risk? Put another way, what are you most attached to - natural health or iodine? From what I have read on this site, it seems to me that some people have a love affair with their iodine and are not about to let a little matter like the truth get in the way of that.
I know that iodine is very good for a lot of people. My husband loves it but it almost killed me.
