There's such a thing as soap nuts. I've never tried them, but a frend of mine has used them and claims they work good. Our skin has an oil that can get into the clothes that needs to come out of them. I've used borax, too, like Mira mentioned that softens the water and does well cleaning clothes.

You health food store should have safe laundry liquid, too.
