I wonder if it could be related to parasites to some degree as they do seem to spread, increase in number and get larger over time. Diet definitely is a culprit. Not so sure about the sun as I know my Mom was not one to sit in the sun and she has them all over her back. For some reason it is more popular on the back and front of the trunk.
