A biopsy was done in study on normal lips and actinic cheilitis lips. When a study is done, things are checked that might not be routinely checked. As I said, it is normal to have fibroblasts in lip tissue. However, it is abnormal to have too little or too many of them. So, a biopsy or possibly noninvasive microscopy can detect increased fibroblasts if a doctor specifically looks for the number.

Oh, here is a link about filggrin. It is separate from fibroblasts, but I thought it was interesting how a genetic mutation can cause eczema. It affects the skin barrier. Individuals with mutations in the gene coding for filaggrin are strongly predisposed to a severe form of eczema.
Scientists hope to develop treatments for eczema through their newfound knowledge of filaggrin.
