Is there a way to heal yourself of hypothyroidism, especially after taking medication for years?

I have been on a synthroid/cytomel combo for about 7 or so years. I also am on metformin for pcos.

I would LOVE to be drug free, but wonder if it's honestly possible after taking thyroid meds for so long. I've heard that your thyroid basically "dies off" after years of medication...is this true?
