Tretinoin is generally the topical version, maybe some people take it internally, idk--but the pill form of accutane is different and is called isotretinoin. I used Tretinoin (Retin-A) topically for years with no obvious side effects. I didn't have acne, just used it for more glowing, nicer skin.
