This is old, I didn't see your question earlier, sorry.

I smash it to break the skin, then I put it on a plate and smash it flat with a glass spice bottle to release the oils, then chop it up, put on a spoon and in the mouth, wash it down with water. I rarely taste it. I can eat a bulb daily, but I could never ever chew a clove.
