Tryptophan is the strongest "natural" sleep remedy I know of. (Well... except for the strongest Kava kava, opium poppy and cannabis indica plants.) I find tryptophan works much superior to 5-HTP.
I would start at 1g and slowly move up to 3g (or more)... one hour before bedtime... until you get the desired effect.
The only issue with Tryptophan is that it can cause weird side effects at TOO HIGH DOSES... such as making people feel "loopy" and at worst you'll get Exploding Head Syndrome

I kid you not! I have had this happen several times when I took 2g or above - shortly after nodding off I awoke to a sensation as intense as if someone had planted a bomb in my head and blew my skull off. It is harmless (although scary) and the sleep-inducing properties of L-tryptophan are desirable and effective enough to merit using it in spite of these effects.
If you don't like the effect, go down by 500mg the next night and you'll be fine 99.99% of the time.
