Cleansing will help everyone! How much it can improve your OCD is hard to say. A very thorough bowel cleanse, the use of probiotics and enzymes, and a good B-complex supplement is essential. Anti-depressants used to treat OCD are called SSRIs (selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors). Serotonin is a neurotransmitter naturally present in the body and manufactured from the amino acid tryptophan. B vitamins are necessary to convert tryptophan into serotonin. Some of the B vitamins are manufactured by beneficial bacteria residing in the colon. B vitamins are depleted as a result of poor diet, inbalanced intestinal flora and stress. Cleansing the colon and replacing the flora with probiotics is very beneficial. Enzymes promote more thorough digestion and assist in absorbing nutrients from foods, and B-complex helps build the reserves.
Tryptophan used to be available as a natural nutritional supplement. Unfortunately, the FDA banned its sale. Tryptophan converts to 5-HTP prior to its conversion to serotonin, and 5-HTP IS available as a supplement in most healthfood stores. You may benefit from supplementing with 5-HTP as well. Herbs such as valerian or kava are useful for anxiety, although kava has been linked with liver damage in some people and should be used carefully and with caution.
Last, but certainly not least, is stress management. Regularly engaging in meditation or a practice such as taiji or yoga would be very beneficial on many levels. Regular exercise is also necessary. Pay close attention to times when your symptoms are worse and see if you can discern any patterns present or hints to the root of your anxiety.
