I stumbled onto this forum by searching every thing I could on empty nose syndrome. I had surgery 3 years ago in which my surgeon removed not only maxillary sinus cysts and polyps but also reduced my turbinates. I had been told for the past 30 years that I needed some work done on my nose and sinus and always refused. I never complained about the pain, just gritted my teeth and went on with life. I had to have a follow-up surgery 3 months later as cysts had returned in a major way and I had an uncontrolled infection in some of the sinus tissue (or so I was told by the surgeon). Following that surgery he promptly released me without further visits the week after surgery. I was still in massive pain, nose crusting and bleeding intermittently and was physically in poor shape as a result.
It was suggested to me that I see a specialist at Cleveland clinic and I did. I heard him talking to his residents in the hall after viewing my ct scans and he said this woman has been butchered. He started me on sinus rinses and permacort and heavy Antibiotics and told me I had an infection still lingering from the initial surgery. I have seen him every 3 months up until last November when I decided to find a doctor a little closer. I went to see an ENT in Columbus, OH. He was so kind and gentle. After viewing my newest CT scan (performed the week prior to the visit) he sat beside me and said he was so sorry for what had been done to me and did I understand everything about my complications? He took me into another office and showed me a normal sinus CT scan and then he showed me mine. I had never understood the reports that came with my ct scans that said I had extensive removal of interior tissue and turbinates. I actually have no turbinates and no division between the sinuses and interior wall of my nose (septum).
Now I understand why things aren't normal anymore. I went from never breathing out of my nose for my entire life to having pain every time air enters my nose. I can no longer blow my nose even though I feel thick mucus and can see it when I look into my nasal passage. I feel every last bit of it as it goes down the back of my throat and if I try to blow my nose I do not understand why nothing comes out it all flows down my throat getting caught and gagging me in the process.
I have the advise from the new doc (whom I really liked), and he has been so honest and upfront with me. There really is nothing to be done. He has given me sprays to thin the mucus and sprays to stop the production of mucus at night so I can get some rest without waking up choking all the time. Is there anyone out there who can give me any suggestions of hope for this? How can this happen and why are doctors doing this to people? I pray that someone has some words of wisdom and hope.
