this is very cool. A lot of herbal information is still findable in wiccan spells, 4 thieves vinegar (remedy against infectious disease) is used for protective spells, and you can find it supply shops for hoodoo practitioners. As well as recipes.
I know from my grandmother that herbs are more effective when picked during the full moon (NOW!) and transplanted during the new moon, when the plant is dormant and less active. Herbs picked during the new moon are less potent.
You have me chasing the child ballads for herbal information, that just didn't hit me until I read this. I gather it was not uncommon for the refrain to be a list of herbs. (Scarborough. fair is a surviving example)
Stinging nettle was used by the pioneers as a remedy for arthritis, my grandmother told me that they would make a poultice. I know my great grandmother was bitten by a rattlesnake, and she survived, but I would love to know if more was done for her than the elders laying hands on her, if maybe faith was helped along by a little practical herbal knowledge.
I keep wondering about silver sage, how to use it, what it's good for, since it's considered the most effective plant by the entire occult community for dispelling negative energy when used as an incense.
We are going through the biggest information purge since the catholic church burned the witches.
