Dopamine may react with acetaldehyde to form salsolinol mediated by the enzyme salsolinol synthase. But salsolinol is a neurotoxin involved in the apoptosis of dopaminergic neurons. This implicates the production of acetaldehyde by Candida Albicans as a possible precursor to the development of Parkinson's disease in genetically predisposed individuals.
