paintings found in 11 Spanish caves has shown that some were made 41,000 years ago, some ten thousand years earlier than previously thought.

Although the first evidence of human symbolism dates back 70,000 to 100,000 years to engraved beads and egg shells found in Africa, the images are the oldest cave paintings in Europe and the earliest accurately dated samples in the world.

Unlike most cave paintings some of the images do not represent animals, suggesting that the very first wall paintings were abstract
