hi
I am so very grateful for this site. There is mounting
evidence that mistreatment and worse may be on-going and
pervasive in many aspects of our healthcare system.. I give
a number of serious references below, but also, because
I am involved helping build the software for participatory
clinical trials, I had to take a class on the history
of this problem, and learned things that would make
most people's jaw drop.... It was an official federally
mandated course. People are trying to solve this problem..
for example: The Presidential Commission on the Study of
Bioethical Issues http://www.bioethics.gov/
and some physicians are working
on publishing articles that help uncover some of the problems, but as patients, we must take extra extra care...
Ideally we need a buddy system so when we are vulnerable
we have someone with us at all times... all times. Because
it just takes one needle, one omitted form, one person to
misrepresent you, etc. I write now because
I was recently up at the California Pacific Medical
Center for a SPECT brain image and was seriously mistreated, and experienced a great deal of medical
errors and ineptitude. They have no idea that I work
with clinical trials. Here are some of the things I learned when I took the class, but also, which are ongoing in dealing with and documenting this problem.. it might be bigger than the problem with priests in the catholic church.... in terms of abusing trust of innocent people.
There is a long history of unethical behavior among the medical practice, both in studies and in private practice. the most egrecious (loudest most difficult to believe) is
the famous syphyllis study, that lasted 50 years. In this
study, black men were intentionally given the syphyllis drug and were not told. Even after a cure was discovered, the men were not told and they were not given the cure, in order that the progression of the disease may be studied. The men gave the disease to others and suffered horrible deaths.
The study became known because the press became involved. It is not the only study where this type of situation has occurred. Recently, the unethical practice of medicine and clinical trials has gotten more attention. (see article below from Boston Globe... there are others some more recent)
In one research study that appeared in JAMA, the physician did a "meta study"... that is, a study of studies, and he
said "I did not expect this type of behavior outside of the
Nazi era..."...
Currently there is no law that requires hospitals or clinics to provide a safe health advocate or buddy....maybe
that could make a difference...

Surveyed scientists admit misconduct One-third cite research tactics
By Gareth Cook, Globe Staff | June 9, 2005
A third of American biomedical scientists have engaged in questionable research practices, according to survey results released yesterday that raise questions about the integrity of the nation's multibillion-dollar quest to understand the human body and cure diseases.

and from The Presidential Commission on the Study of
Bioethical Issues:
http://www.bioethics.gov/
The 14-member international panel of experts convened in Washington Feb. 28-March 1. In the final round table Commission chair Dr. Amy Gutmann probed her panel as to what steps had been taken to prevent that kind of experimentation from happening again.
Dr. Susan Lederer, Professor of History of Medicine and Bioethics at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health testified to the unethical, immoral, unjust medical practices and research of the past, and said there are more atrocities not yet discovered. Even more alarming, ethicist Eric Meslin, director of the Indiana University Center for Bioethics said it could happen in the United States today. “We have a leaky system,” he said.
also:
The public testimony included stunning assertions that non-consensual, unethical medical and brain experimentation is happening today. “All of the horrific experiments [the Commission] mentioned; Willowbrook, MKULTRA, radiation experiments mostly were done without informed consent,” testified Dr. John R Hall, a medical doctor from Texas. “They were funded by the Department of Defense, and intelligence agencies where I’m not so sure you would know if there is an Institutional Review Board much less if IRB is looking at informed consent.”
