The spray works because the capsaicin goes directly into the bloodstream without being affected by digestive juices.

While eating hot peppers helpful (He plans to start doing that soon) it is often difficult to get people to eat the stuff due to the tremendous reactions they have to it.

Also the fast effect is all important when a person has a lot of pain.
