"March 22, 1978
A friend told me of comments about cesareans made at a seminar. The people spoke of two kinds of response to stimulus - primitive fight/flight, which is an all or nothing response, and a more refined response that can judge subtle differences among stimuli, such as what is intended by another person who makes touch contact. These two are apparently integrated in the intense encounter of vaginal birth. They said this integration doesn't happen in cesareans, leaving them much more at the mercy of the fight/flight response. They spoke of some neurological research that showed this. I recognized this as a description of much that I've experienced and recognized in other cesareans."
