Good sleuthing. It could be productive to obtain copies of those cited references and look at their details, to learn what other factors were present. Lots of times , Iodine "tinctures" contain denatured alcohol, which can be "denatured" using any one or more than one toxic substances in combination. The one about the 54 year old, I think he was the Aftican gentleman who drank a bunch of potassium Iodide solution thinking it was iced tea, and although he ingested a humongus amount of iodide, it didn't kill him. Of course its like anything else, even potassium. I think FDA regulates potassium pills so they can't contain more than 99 mg each. Seems ridiculous when you figure that orange juice 12 ounces often contains over a gram of potassium. Heck, even toothpaste contains a warning to call a poison-control center if a person swallows more than an amount incidental to brushing, so , there's poisons all around us allright, just like a screwdriver can be used for turning screws, or can be used to stab someone , the choice is with the user as to how to use the tool.
I think Iodine has a fairly wide window of safety margin, much more so than fluoride and possibly bromide. If anybody gets their hands on the full text of any of the referenced articles or stories, I hope they'll share them.
