Our bodies are impressive machines! As you say, all bacteria are wiped off after 10 days water fast, the GIT is going into the cleanliness of the newborn state before its first meal ... ! I have that nearly impossible dream, for Science to be willing to investigate fasting in a well designed way, and would finally rehabilitate fast in the perception of the vast majority, who still believes fasting is destructive. Well, I am sort of a dreamer ... I understand, though, that what counts along this support site are the practical results.

One of the few scientific studies, an old one I found, was done on fasting children. I did not buy the article, so I do not know the reason why they needed to fast. Investigators found, that if they gave sodium bicarbonate to part of the children, their calcium excretion through the kidneys was significantly lower than the group who only had water. As, usual, there could be bias in the method and results. Maybe their bodies needed to excrete calcium, mobilizing it from inflammation/degeneration sites? ... It so hard to have an unbiased opinion on calcium only, let alone opinion on the complexity of healing through fasting! You are right, looking for evidences can be elusive undertaking.

When it comes to laissez-faire, I believe that NH generally does not support enema/colonics. I accidentally found the online story/book of Nathaniel Bronner Jr, who cites Dick Gregory, and gives his own experience on how enema/colonics can aid the GIT in getting rid of the sludge faster. He claims his diet was nearly perfect for years, and his stomach "was flat", before he undertook 10 days water fast. He experienced black sludge coming out at every of the 20 or so colonics he did while fasting. He says that even after a professional colonic, that was done in manner to yielded clean water with some bile at the end, the next day colonic also yielded dark matter. ... I am thinking, if my bowel stops expelling anything, after my last meal had been cleared, as it happens usually on water fast, should I consider and try his advice? ... Or do I want to live my bowel in peace, as per NH, but with sludge inside? What does your intuition say?
