Of course, when Merle did that song and others like Okie from Muskogee he had not yet been turned on to smokin' doobies by Willie Nelson.  After that happened, Merle grew a beard, let his hair down and they DID smoke marihoona in Muskogee and he was more into singin' about being tired of the dirty old city than he was into being mostly a redneck.
