Yeah - from my experience - I'd say that you're right in suspecting that something other than "genetics" may be a root cause of your gray.
Years ago, I noticed that I would have "phases" where gray hairs would appear on my head almost overnight - hairs that were darkly-pigmented would just quickly turn gray, seemingly. I would pluck the hairs from my head - and would sometimes notice areas (on the same strand) that would first seem to turn a very light-brown, then transition to gray.
Actually, I have this problem to this day. Like I said, the tendency seems to come and go (or wax and wane) - depending on my nutritional status (at least there is evidence that points in that direction).
Years ago, I began to believe that my mineral levels - or mineral balance - had a lot to do with my gray-hair situation. But I can't quite remember if I was able to determine at the time which specific minerals were involved. (Perhaps I thought that it had something to do with zinc, not sure.)
Anyway - my zinc levels may very well play a role - but lately, it seems that my copper levels may be playing a more important role. I took a hair-mineral analysis test in 2009 - and again late last year - and both times, it showed copper levels that were quite low/deficient. (There may be at least a couple of reasons for my low copper levels - one of them being that I was/am taking various supplements that are known to antagonize or displace copper - like vitamin C, zinc, and other minerals.)
And lately, I've seemed to notice that when I take more copper - my hair-pigment/graying problems diminish. There just seems to be a noticeable correlation.
So I share all of this to say that mineral levels - particularly copper levels - might be an issue for you. A lot of people (including myself - at least in the past) think of copper as a mineral that is "toxic" - as something to rid the body of - when in fact some people may be *low* in copper, and need to supplement it. I'd be careful about overdoing copper supplementation - but copper might be a mineral that you may benefit from taking.
Good luck. :)
