In the past, there used to be small farmers and manufacturers all over the place, and many things weren't transported very far.

Companies are turning to large scale farms, and large manufacturers, then transporting things all over the place. Many of the small farms and small manufacturers have gone. In a transport crisis, things will just not be available.

There is also a huge amount imported from other countries. It is not grown or manufactured locally. When the transport stops, it will not be available.

All it takes is a big rise in fuel prices, and the price of everything will go up. The price of fuel is continually rising.

Or it could be a disaster which destroys sections of roads and railways.
