Hi James
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately the results so far have been terrible.
Exactly three weeks ago a second CT scan was done and it showed that the bleeding had worsened. Furthermore for some reason there was a second but small new bleed on the other side. He was told to immediately go to the ER. From there he was sent to the neuro ICU where he underwent a bilateral CVD procedure the next day.
Apparently air got into the skull and as the neurosurgeon stated, he suffered from Airheadeness! He was unresponsive for more than 3 days, during which, he aspirated and was inflicted with pneumonia. He was given anti-biotics and his throat was suctioned regularly.
Gradually he became responsive and the symptoms of pneumonia subsided. The MRI and CT scan results were positive. He was then moved to a regular floor as he regained movement in his limps and speech improved.
After two days on the regular hospital floor, he was released to another rehab facility. On the third day of his stay, once again he aspirated and was again inflicted with pneumonia. He was taken to the hospital unit and then to the ICU. Once again he was given another round of anti-biotics and aggressive suctioning of the throat. His condition improved and he was moved to the regular floor of this second hospital. At this time all feedings by mouth were stopped as it was strongly suspected that he was suffering from severe dysphagia. Tests with camera confirmed this assertion and we were told that the only option was a stomach feeding tube for the time being. Otherwise the risk of aspiration is far too great and he will probably not recover from the next round of pneumonia. So yesterday the feeding tube was placed in and the hope is that over time the dysphagia will improve and he can resume normal eating.
I should also mention that since this ordeal began three weeks ago, the state of dementia has worsened.
On the positive side, he appears to have full movement of all limps and when not tired, the speech patterns are normal.
So the focus has shifted towards getting the proper nutrients for general recovery, halting or improving the worsening dementia via the the feeding tube.
Please advise.
Thanks in advance.
